The lesser valley coral (Platygyra verweyi) is a large, heavy-bodied brain coral whose surface reads like a topographic map. Tight, winding valleys divided by thin, sharply defined walls. The septa running along those valleys are neat and evenly spaced, giving colonies a very orderly, almost geometric appearance. Columellae are weak to essentially absent, so the valley floors tend to look relatively open compared to some of its relatives. Coloration runs toward muted tones, typically plain or slightly mottled grey or brown, with the walls and valley floors usually appearing in contrasting shades that help the ridge-and-groove structure really pop. In the wild this species grows on reef flats and upper slopes, where it experiences good water movement and decent light exposure, forming substantial boulder-shaped colonies over time. In the aquarium it fits naturally into a moderate-light, moderate-flow position, and while it is reef safe and not overly demanding, it does carry an intermediate care rating. Mainly because large stony corals benefit from stable water chemistry and regular attention to feeding and alkalinity. Patient keepers who can maintain consistent conditions will find it a durable, characterful addition to an LPS-focused display.
