Granulated mushroom coral (Pleuractis granulosa) is one of those corals that doesn't need a rock to call home. Unlike most stony corals, it's a free-living species, meaning adult colonies rest unattached on sandy or rubble-strewn reef floors rather than cementing themselves to hard substrate. That independence is one of its more interesting quirks, and it means placement in the aquarium requires a bit of thought. Set it on a flat, open surface where it won't tip or get tumbled by flow. The surface of the coral is covered in small granular bumps that give it a distinctly textured appearance, setting it apart from the smoother disc corals people often compare it to. In the wild it's found across a broad stretch of the tropical Indo-Pacific, from shallow reef margins down to around 40 meters, so it's adapted to a decent range of light intensities. In the aquarium it does well under moderate lighting and genuinely prefers low water movement, which suits its sedentary, unanchored lifestyle. It's considered a beginner-friendly coral, and that reputation is well earned. It's tolerant, relatively undemanding, and a good introduction to keeping LPS stony corals for someone branching out from softies.
