The paradise threadfin (Polynemus paradiseus) is one of those fish that makes you do a double-take the first time you see it. Those elongated, free-flowing rays extending from the lower pectoral fins give the fish an almost otherworldly appearance, drifting like delicate tendrils as it moves through the water. In the wild, this species ranges from the west coast of India across to Thailand, where it inhabits sandy-bottomed coastal and brackish waters, moving into freshwater to spawn. It is a dedicated carnivore, naturally hunting shrimps, small fish, and bottom-dwelling invertebrates, so a meaty diet of appropriately sized frozen or live foods is essential to keep it in good condition. Despite being labeled beginner-friendly, the paradise threadfin does best when its keeper understands its preference for calmer water and a spacious tank that gives it room to move without stress. Tankmates should be chosen carefully. Nothing aggressive or nippy, since those signature pectoral threads are tempting targets. A sandy substrate echoes its natural habitat and gives it a familiar surface to cruise over. With good husbandry, this is a long-lived fish that rewards patience and attention with a genuinely distinctive presence in a large freshwater display.
