Joker's Boomerang Coral (Polyphyllia novaehiberniae) is one of those corals that breaks the mold. Quite literally, since it doesn't attach to the reef but instead sits freely on the substrate, shifting position as currents and growth dictate. Found across a broad stretch of the Western Pacific, from the Marshall Islands and Kiribati down to New Caledonia and across to Halmahera in Indonesia, it inhabits protected reef slopes and lagoons, typically in calmer, shallower water though it can be found down to around 40 meters. The colony shape is irregular and elongated, and one of its more recognizable features is a central groove running along its length. Though this furrow can become less defined as the coral matures. Coloration is generally brown, which is honest and unsensational, but the real visual appeal comes from its daytime behavior: unlike many corals that only extend tentacles after dark, this species keeps its polyps fanned out through the day, giving the whole colony a soft, almost fuzzy texture. That trait makes it more engaging to watch in a display tank than its plain color might suggest. It's considered a beginner-friendly coral, doing well under moderate light with low water movement, which makes it a reasonable choice for reef keepers who are just getting started with LPS or free-living coral species.
