The saddled bichir (Polypterus endlicheri) is one of the largest members of an ancient fish lineage that has barely changed in millions of years, and keeping one feels a bit like housing a living fossil. Native to a wide sweep of African river systems, including the Nile, Niger, and Chad basin, it inhabits slow-moving rivers and swampy backwaters where it hunts fish, snails, and crustaceans along the bottom. One of its most remarkable traits is the ability to breathe atmospheric air directly, which lets it survive in oxygen-poor environments that would stress most other fish. In the aquarium it carries that same hardy quality, and despite its intimidating adult size it is often recommended as a manageable choice for keepers willing to commit to the space it needs. It is not an aggressive fish toward tankmates in the traditional sense, but it is an opportunistic predator, so anything small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually disappear. It also does not tolerate crowding well, so a spacious setup is genuinely important rather than just a nice-to-have. The body is armored in hard, interlocking scales with a series of dark saddle-like markings across the back, and the distinctive dorsal finlets run the length of its spine in a way unlike any other freshwater fish you are likely to keep.
