Hump coral (Porites annae) is a reef-building species from the Indo-Pacific that earns its place in the aquarium through sheer adaptability and a surprisingly varied color palette. In the wild it is found from the surface down to around 10 meters, often forming single-species stands across sloping reef faces in both clear and turbid water. Its growth form shifts depending on conditions. Colonies typically develop nodular, anastomosing branches or columns rising from an encrusting or laminar base, though in murkier water the laminar form tends to dominate. This flexibility in form is part of what makes the genus so successful as a reef builder in nature. Colors range from pale or deep green through yellow, purple, and brown, so individual colonies can look quite different from one another. In the aquarium, Porites corals as a group are considered more demanding than the typical beginner SPS species, and Hump coral fits that profile. It appreciates consistent, high-quality water and reliable lighting to support its zooxanthellae. Moderate flow helps keep detritus from settling on the colony without blasting the tissue directly. Patience is part of the deal here, as Porites tends to grow slowly, but a well-established colony is a genuinely rewarding centerpiece for a mature reef system.
