Hump coral (Porites australiensis) is one of those solid, dependable reef builders you'll encounter throughout the Indo-Pacific, from shallow lagoons right down to depths approaching 60 meters. Colonies grow into broad hemispherical or helmet-like mounds that can reach impressive sizes over time, and the surface texture ranges from relatively smooth to noticeably bumpy with irregular humps and nodules. Hence the common name. Coloration is typically cream or yellow in deeper or more shaded settings, though colonies in bright, shallow water can display richer hues. In the wild, this species shares habitat with close relatives like Porites lutea and Porites lobata, particularly along back-reef margins and fringing reef edges where flow is moderate rather than punishing. In the aquarium, it demands the kind of high-intensity lighting and stable water quality that you'd associate with most SPS-leaning setups, so it's best suited to reef tanks that are already dialed in and running smoothly. This isn't a beginner coral, but for an intermediate keeper with a mature, well-lit reef, it's a rewarding piece with genuine presence. Growth is slow by nature, so patience is part of the deal with any Porites. Don't expect rapid changes, but do expect a long-lived, robust colony if conditions are right.
