Hump Coral

Hump Coral (Porites densa) is a small, hemispherical stony coral native to the back reef margins of the Western Central Pacific, with confirmed populations around the Philippines, Australia, and Palau. Its colonies stay relatively modest in size, rarely exceeding half a meter across, and present a smooth, even surface that distinguishes it from the more textured or branching Porites you might encounter elsewhere. Coloration runs toward the muted end of the spectrum. Cream, grey, and brown are typical, so this isn't a coral you'd choose for a bold color statement. What it does offer is a natural, organic mound shape that works well as a structural centerpiece in a reef display. In the wild it tends to occupy back reef zones rather than the high-energy outer reef face, which gives you a sense of the kind of flow it prefers. Moderate rather than punishing. High light is important for long-term health, as you'd expect from a zooxanthellate stony coral. Hump Coral is generally categorized as an intermediate-level species, meaning it's not the best starting point if you're still getting your reef chemistry dialed in, but it's a reasonable next step once your system is stable and running well.
