Hump coral (Porites heronensis) is a reef-building species native to the shallow reefs and rocky substrates of Papua New Guinea in the Western Central Pacific. In the wild it colonizes semi-protected reef zones where conditions are calmer, settling onto both natural reef structures and terrigenous rock. Growth forms vary. Colonies can develop as encrusting sheets, submassive mounds, or irregular columns depending on conditions. Whatever the form, the surface stays notably smooth because the individual corallites are shallow and closely packed, giving the coral a dense, almost polished look that sets it apart from more textured Porites relatives. Coloration ranges from cream and tan to olive green and brown, sometimes appearing mottled, so individual colonies can look quite different from one another. In the aquarium this is an intermediate-level coral, best suited to keepers who already have a handle on stable reef chemistry. It appreciates high light and moderate water movement, consistent with what it experiences on shallow Indo-Pacific reef flats. Like most Porites, it is generally reef safe and not known to cause trouble with neighboring corals. It is not the flashiest coral on the market, but its understated tones and solid growth habit make it an honest, long-term addition to a mature reef system.
