Hump Coral (Porites latistellata) is one of those corals that rewards a closer look. The colony structure is distinctive. Thin, flattened branches that twist and contort from a thin basal sheet, giving the whole growth form an irregular, almost sculptural quality. Run your eye along a branch and you'll notice the tiny corallites are arranged in uneven rows rather than the uniform grid you see in many other Porites species. Coloration is a muted pale brown, so this isn't a coral that's going to dominate a display tank visually, but it has a quiet, natural character that works well in reef setups aiming for an authentic Pacific look. In the wild it turns up in shallow, sheltered reef zones across the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Environments that tend to be calmer and well-lit, which maps fairly directly onto its aquarium requirements. Like most Porites corals, it harbors zooxanthellae and depends on solid lighting to thrive, while appreciating moderate, consistent water movement over its branches. It sits comfortably in the intermediate care bracket. Not a beginner's first coral, but a manageable and rewarding choice for a keeper who already has stable reef parameters dialed in.
