Hump Coral (Porites napopora) is a visually distinctive stony coral native to shallow reef environments across the Western Pacific, with recorded populations ranging from Indonesia to Japan. Its growth form is unusual within the Porites group. Colonies develop as broad, flattened base plates that give rise to irregular, tapered branches, all fused together in a somewhat haphazard arrangement that gives the colony a genuinely lumpy, textured profile. The corallites themselves sit in excavated pits along the colony surface, and this effect is most pronounced on the branches, where the deep pitting creates a noticeably rough texture you can see from a distance. Walls between individual corallites are thin, which is typical of the genus. Coloration is a warm brown with white corallite centers. Not a flashy coral, but one with a natural, reef-authentic look that suits mixed SPS setups well. In the aquarium, this species falls into intermediate territory. It appreciates strong lighting and moderate water movement to keep the corallite pits clear of detritus and sediment, which can accumulate in those deeper pockets. As with most Porites, it tends to be somewhat tolerant compared to more finicky SPS, but it still requires stable, well-maintained reef conditions and should not be the first coral a newer keeper attempts.
