Hump coral (Porites stephensoni) is one of those workmanlike stony corals that doesn't announce itself loudly but plays a genuine role on the reefs it calls home. Found across the Indo-Pacific on shallow reef flats, typically between about six and fifteen meters depth, colonies grow in encrusting, hemispherical, or columnar forms and generally stay under half a meter across. Making them more compact than many of their Porites relatives. Coloration runs from cream through various shades of brown, subtle but natural-looking in a mixed reef display. Like other members of the genus, the individual polyps are tiny and densely packed, giving the surface that characteristic fine-pored texture that Porites are known for. In the aquarium, this species falls into intermediate territory. Not the most demanding coral you'll keep, but it does appreciate consistent, high-intensity lighting and moderate water movement to keep its tissue healthy and free of sediment. Porites as a group tend to be slow growers, and that patience extends to how long they take to show stress or recovery, so keeping parameters stable matters more than chasing perfection. A solid choice for a hobbyist ready to move beyond beginner softies and into small-polyp stony corals.
