The ocellate freshwater stingray (Potamotrygon motoro) is one of the most recognizable rays in the hobby, patterned with rings of orange, yellow, or cream against a brownish-grey disc. Though that patterning varies so widely that named color variants like 'blue', 'orange', and 'marbled' forms are regularly traded, and some command noticeably higher prices. Wild fish come from major South American river systems including the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná-Paraguay, and Uruguay basins, where they spend daylight hours half-buried in sandy substrate and emerge after dark to hunt. That nocturnal rhythm carries over into captivity, and providing a soft sand bed to dig into goes a long way toward keeping these animals comfortable. Despite a care level sometimes listed as beginner-friendly, the commitment here is serious. These rays can live beyond twenty years and require a genuinely massive tank footprint. They are also armed with a venomous tail spine that demands consistent respect during feeding and maintenance; a solid container rather than a net should always be used when moving them. Tankmate selection needs thought, since anything small enough to swallow likely will be, while suckermouth catfish can cause harm by latching onto the disc. Over time, well-kept specimens often become surprisingly interactive, recognizing their keepers and surfacing at feeding time.
