Slender Lungfish

The slender lungfish (Protopterus dolloi) is one of those fish that makes you question the line between fish and land animal. Native to the Congo River basin and a handful of other West-Central African river systems including the Ogowe and Kouilou-Niari, it occupies slow, heavily vegetated waters and swamps that can partially dry out seasonally. What sets this species apart from nearly everything else in the hobby is its biology: it breathes atmospheric air as an obligation, not an option, regularly surfacing regardless of water oxygen levels. Its four slender, limb-like fins are muscular enough to let it crawl short distances overland, and when conditions get harsh it can excavate a mucus-lined burrow and enter a dormant state called aestivation, potentially for years. In the wild, males dig nesting tunnels during the dry season and guard eggs and larvae while the females stay out in open water. Diet shifts interestingly during breeding toward plant matter, though at other times the fish takes fish, insects, and most anything it can manage. In the aquarium, the slender lungfish is genuinely hardy and not technically demanding, but the sheer tank size required, its unpredictable aggression toward tankmates, and its impressive longevity make it a serious commitment best suited to dedicated keepers with the space and patience to match.
