Native to the Amazon River basin across a broad stretch of South America, it has also established feral populations in warmer regions worldwide after escaping or being released from aquaria. A testament to just how adaptable this fish is. That adaptability includes a useful trick: it can breathe air directly, which helps it survive in oxygen-poor or stagnant waters that would stress most other fish. In the aquarium, you'll typically find it parked against the glass, wedged under a piece of driftwood, or just sitting perfectly still on a flat surface. Behavior that can alarm newer keepers who mistake its stillness for illness. Its broad, sail-like dorsal fin and leopard-spotted patterning across a brown body make it easy to identify. It's a committed herbivore and will graze on algae and plant matter, though supplemental feeding with vegetables or sinking wafers keeps it healthy long-term.
