Urquisho (Pyrrhulina laeta) is a compact, elongated characin from the central and upper Amazon River Basin, where it likely haunts the shallows and leaf litter of slow-moving or standing water. Like others in its genus, it has the classic pencilfish silhouette. A streamlined body, an upturned mouth, and bold horizontal patterning that helps it blend into dappled light near the surface. In the wild it feeds on worms, small crustaceans, and insects, and that predatory instinct carries into the aquarium. It is an active, surface-oriented fish that will readily take most meaty prepared and live foods, but very small tankmates or tiny fry should be considered potential snacks. Its modest adult size makes it manageable for a 20-gallon setup, though a longer footprint with plenty of surface cover, floating plants or overhanging vegetation, lets it behave naturally and feel secure. Urquisho is best paired with similarly sized fish that share its soft, slightly acidic water preferences. The care level sits at intermediate mainly because of its dietary needs and preference for well-maintained, softer water rather than any particular sensitivity. Given the right conditions, it is a rewarding and characterful little fish with a lifespan of several years.
