Two-spot Rasbora

The two-spot rasbora (Rasbora elegans) is one of the bigger members of its genus, capable of reaching nearly eight inches in a well-maintained aquarium. Which immediately sets it apart from the small schoolers most hobbyists picture when they hear the word rasbora. It comes from the forested streams of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Borneo, and Sumatra, where it inhabits shaded, soft-water environments. Identification is straightforward once you know what to look for: rather than the dark lateral stripe common to many relatives, this species carries two distinct spot-like markings on each flank. One beneath the dorsal fin and one near the caudal peduncle. Some individuals also show a smaller mark above the anal fin, though the intensity of all these markings can vary by collection locality. Despite its size, it is a genuinely peaceful fish, but it can inadvertently unsettle shy or timid tankmates simply through its active movement and bulk. It pairs well with bold cyprinids, loaches, and larger characins. Like most schooling fish, it does best in groups of at least six. The colors sharpen, the fish settle down, and the whole display becomes much more natural. It is not commonly encountered in the trade, which is a shame, as it makes an interesting centerpiece for a Southeast Asian biotope setup. Intermediate keepers with adequately sized tanks will find it a rewarding, long-lived species.
