Rose Common Pleco
Hypostomus roseopunctatus
A hefty South American pleco with an unusual ability to breathe air.

About
Found in the rivers and tributaries of the Uruguay basin within the La Plata system, Hypostomus roseopunctatus is a sizeable armored catfish that can push well past a foot in length at full maturity. Like others in its genus, it possesses the ability to breathe air facultatively, meaning it can supplement gill respiration by gulping atmospheric oxygen directly. A handy adaptation for the warm, sometimes oxygen-depleted waters of its native range. In the aquarium this trait is mostly a curiosity rather than a care concern, but it does underscore just how tough and adaptable this group of plecos tends to be. Expect a mostly nocturnal, bottom-oriented fish that spends its days wedged behind driftwood or flat against rockwork, becoming more active once the lights dim. It is an omnivore, so a diet of sinking wafers, fresh vegetables, and occasional protein will keep it in good shape. The tank needs to be substantial given the adult size, and good filtration matters because large plecos produce a meaningful bioload. This is not a species for nano setups or low-effort tanks, but a reasonably experienced keeper with adequate space should find it a manageable and rewarding long-term resident.
