The royal pleco (Panaque nigrolineatus) is one of the most visually distinctive large plecos in the hobby, sporting a cream or grey body crossed with bold dark lines that give it an almost graphic, high-contrast look. It's native to the Orinoco basin and the southern tributaries of the middle and lower Amazon, where it spends its time clinging to submerged wood and root systems in fast-moving, oxygen-rich water. One of the most interesting things about this fish is that it genuinely eats wood. Not just grazes on it, but actually rasps and digests it as a meaningful part of its diet. Keeping driftwood in the aquarium is not optional here; it's a dietary requirement. Alongside the wood, it will accept a range of plant matter and sinking foods. Despite its size, adults can grow well past a foot long, the royal pleco is a peaceful fish that causes no real trouble with tankmates. What it will do is mostly hide. This is a shy species that tends to stay tucked away during the day, so don't expect it to be a centrepiece performer. It also belongs to a genus capable of breathing air facultatively, which is a useful adaptation in low-oxygen conditions. A solid choice for an intermediate keeper with a spacious tank and patience for a fish that lives on its own terms.
