Sailfin Pleco
Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps
A decades-long commitment: this armored giant lives longer than most pets.

About
Sailfin plecos (Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps) are among the most impressive armored catfish in the freshwater hobby, though many keepers don't fully appreciate what they're taking on when they pick up a cute juvenile at the fish store. Native to the middle and upper reaches of the Amazon and Orinoco river systems in South America, these fish grow into genuine giants that demand a very large, well-filtered aquarium. The body is covered in interlocking bony plates and patterned with a distinctive leopard-like mosaic of dark spots and reticulations across both body and the tall, sail-like dorsal fin. That fin is the quickest way to identify the species at a glance. In the wild they're nocturnal algae feeders, and they retain that schedule in captivity, becoming more active once the lights go out. They can also breathe atmospheric air directly, which helps them cope with low-oxygen conditions in their native habitats. Temperament-wise, mature individuals get territorial and will bully or outcompete other bottom-dwellers for food and space. This is a fish for patient, experienced keepers with appropriately large setups. The real commitment here is the lifespan, which can stretch well past two decades.
