The sailfin tetra (Crenuchus spilurus) is a small but fascinating characin from the blackwater rivers and flooded forest floors of the Orinoco and Amazon basins, as well as coastal drainages across the Guianas. It is the only described species in its genus, though color patterns and body proportions vary noticeably across its wide range. Despite the aggressive label, this fish is actually quite timid toward other species. Its territorial nature is mostly directed at rival males of its own kind, and physical fights are uncommon when the tank is arranged with enough cover to break lines of sight. In the wild and in the aquarium, it spends most of its time near the bottom, picking off invertebrates like mayfly larvae and small crustaceans. That large mouth is a giveaway: this fish is built to hunt. Breeding behavior is one of its most compelling traits. Males court females with elaborate fin displays, then take sole responsibility for guarding eggs attached to the roof of a small cave or sheltered structure. The male's presence during incubation appears genuinely necessary. Artificially removing eggs tends to result in failure. First-time breeders sometimes eat early spawns, so patience matters. This species does best when kept alone or alongside peaceful, similarly sized fish that won't outcompete it at feeding time.
