Sanggau Betta

Found in the lower Kapuas basin of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Betta antoni is a slender wild betta that was known among enthusiasts as Betta sp. 'Sanggau' before receiving its formal name. It belongs to the Betta akarensis group, a cluster of closely related species sharing lanceolate caudal fins with elongated median rays in mature males and characteristic facial striping. What helps identify this particular species are the vivid blue iridescence on the body scales, a distinctly black lower lip and chin bar, two postorbital stripes running from the eye toward the gill cover, and a slim body profile that sets it apart from bulkier relatives. Like all anabantoids, it possesses a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe air directly from the surface, which is an adaptation that served its ancestors well in the slow, often oxygen-poor waters of Borneo's lowland streams. In the aquarium it needs a calm environment with plenty of cover and broken sightlines. It can be housed with peaceful tankmates or even kept as a group, though some low-level squabbling should be expected. Breeding is genuinely rewarding but requires some patience: the male is a paternal mouthbrooder, incubating the eggs for nearly two weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Intermediate-level experience is a fair starting point for this species.
