Leather Coral

Found across the reef systems of the Central Indo-Pacific, Sarcophyton mililatensis is a leather coral in the toadstool family and a solid choice for hobbyists setting up their first soft coral display. Like other sarcophytons, it presents as a broad, fleshy cap covered in polyps that extend during periods of good flow and light, giving the colony a textured, almost fuzzy appearance when fully open. The cap tends to be pale tan to cream, sometimes with a slightly greenish or brownish cast depending on the zooxanthellae population within its tissues. This species, as with most of its relatives, will periodically close up and shed a waxy film from its surface. A normal part of its biology and not a cause for alarm. Moderate lighting and moderate water movement suit it well, and it does not require the intense conditions that many SPS corals demand. It is considered reef safe and poses little threat to neighboring corals under typical conditions, though giving it reasonable space is sensible since leather corals can release compounds that irritate some sensitive neighbors. Altogether, it is a practical, low-drama addition to a mixed reef that rewards consistent water quality more than any specialized care.
