Found on the reefs surrounding the Fiji Islands, Sarcophyton soapiae is a soft coral belonging to the leather coral group, closely related to the familiar toadstool corals many hobbyists start with. Like other members of its genus, it grows a thick, fleshy stalk that flares out into a broad, ruffle-edged cap studded with polyps. The polyps extend to feed and retract when the coral is disturbed, and it is completely normal for the colony to periodically close up for several days while it sheds a thin waxy layer from its surface. A natural process that can alarm newer keepers but is nothing to worry about. Sarcophyton corals have a reputation as forgiving reef inhabitants, and this species fits that mold well, making it a reasonable choice for hobbyists who are still getting their feet wet with corals. It is reef safe and poses no serious threat to neighboring stony or soft corals provided it has adequate space, since leather corals can release compounds into the water that irritate close neighbors. Moderate lighting and moderate water movement suit it well, and good nutrient export helps keep the system comfortable for the whole tank.
