Cave Loach

Found roughly 200 meters inside a single limestone cave system in Thailand, Schistura deansmarti is one of a small handful of fully troglobitic loaches known from that country. It belongs to the enormously diverse genus Schistura, which contains roughly 190 species spread across Eurasia, but this one occupies an extreme niche that most of its relatives never approach. The cave it calls home holds stagnant water through the dry season and only moderate current even when the rains arrive. Individuals are completely depigmented, showing ghostly pale bodies with no trace of the banding typical in surface-dwelling relatives. Some specimens lack eyes entirely, while others retain only vestigial eyes buried beneath the skin. A classic example of troglomorphic adaptation, where traits useful in lit, food-rich environments are gradually lost over generations in the dark. When not drifting in open water, these fish stay close to crevices and retreat into them quickly when disturbed. All of this is offered here purely as natural history: this species is protected under Thai law, cannot legally be removed from its habitat, and is absolutely not an aquarium subject. Its restricted range, small population, and sensitivity to environmental change make it conservation-fragile in ways that should be respected.
