Found in the fast-moving, oxygen-rich waters of the Xingu River in Brazil, Scobinancistrus aureatus is a hefty armored catfish that commands attention in any large cichlid or pleco setup. Wild fish live among rocky substrates where strong current and clear, warm water are the norm, and replicating that flow in captivity makes a real difference to long-term health. In terms of looks, adults develop a deep, robust body covered in the rough, file-like odontodes that give the genus its name, typically showing a warm golden-yellow spotting or patterning against a dark base. The exact pattern can vary considerably between individuals. Temperament-wise, this species is reasonably tolerant of tankmates but can be territorial with its own kind and other large plecos, especially in confined spaces, so plenty of hiding spots and line-of-sight breaks go a long way. It is an omnivore that does best with a varied diet. Sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein sources all belong on the menu. With a lifespan pushing a decade or more, this is a long-term commitment, and its eventual size means a spacious tank is non-negotiable. A rewarding choice for the intermediate keeper who has the room and patience to do it justice.
