Birdsnest Coral

Found across a broad Indo-Pacific range from the reefs of New Caledonia and Indonesia to the Red Sea waters of Saudi Arabia, Seriatopora lineata is a small-polyp stony coral belonging to the same genus as the well-known birdsnest corals. Its branching structure is characteristically fine and tightly organized, with branches that taper to slender tips and a surface texture that reveals neat, lined polyp rows when observed closely. That linear arrangement of polyps is the trait that sets it apart from its closest relatives and gives the species its name. In the aquarium, it demands the kind of care that keeps intermediate and advanced reefers on their toes. High, consistent water flow is important to keep detritus from settling among the branches, where it can quickly cause tissue recession. Equally critical is strong lighting. This coral does not thrive under dim or marginal illumination. Water quality needs to be stable, as Seriatopora corals in general are among the first to show stress when conditions slip. When everything is dialed in, colonies grow with a satisfying pace and develop a bushy, architectural form that adds real structural interest to the upper and mid regions of a reef display.
