Endemic to Taiwan's fast-flowing streams, Sinogastromyzon puliensis is a hillstream loach with a body plan purpose-built for life in rushing water. The head and belly are broadly flattened, the paired fins are splayed out horizontally, and the pelvic fins are fused together into a powerful adhesive disc. Features that let this fish grip rocks in currents that would sweep most other fish away. Rather than swimming freely, it crawls and shuffles across and beneath substrate. In the wild it favors clean water over a mix of pebbles and larger rocks, at moderate depth. In the aquarium, a strong current with well-oxygenated water and smooth or rounded rocks for grazing is essential. Despite the 'aggressive' and 'carnivore' tags in the data, in practice this species shows peaceable behavior toward appropriately chosen tankmates, though individuals can be territorial around favored feeding spots, and some appear more defensive than others. Possibly males. Keep a group of four or more to see natural behavior and to help offset their tendency toward shyness. Choose tankmates carefully: small midwater cyprinids, rheophilic gobies, and stream-dwelling catfishes tend to work well. One important caveat. Wild collection of this species is tightly regulated in Taiwan, and fish in the trade are reportedly sourced through illegal channels, so buy with awareness of that background.
