The Spotfin Goby Cichlid (Tanganicodus irsacae) is a small but fascinating resident of Lake Tanganyika's surge zone, the turbulent few feet of water where waves crash against rocky shorelines in the lake's northern reaches. Life in this churning habitat has shaped the fish in some remarkable ways: the swim bladder is largely reduced to keep the fish from being tossed around, the body is laterally compressed to cut through current, and the underslung mouth allows it to lie flat against rocks while scraping away at algae and picking off tiny crustaceans. The long, heavily spined dorsal fin does double duty, helping with stability and discouraging birds from snatching the fish from shallow water. In the aquarium, this species is best recognized by its narrower, more pointed mouth compared to related goby cichlids. Behavior-wise, it can be feisty toward its own kind and should ideally be kept as a single specimen or a bonded pair. Once a pair forms, they tend to stay together and will breed using a fascinating relay-style mouthbrooding system where the female and male take turns carrying the eggs and fry. This is not a beginner species. It demands excellent water quality, stable alkaline conditions, and some thought put into tankmates and setup. For the experienced Tanganyikan keeper, though, watching one hop and glide across a rocky aquascape is genuinely rewarding.
