The Featherfin Squeaker (Synodontis eupterus) is one of the most frequently encountered members of its genus in the hobby, though it's often purchased without a clear picture of how large it eventually gets. Juveniles sold at one to three inches display an attractive reticulated, network-like pattern that fades as the fish matures, giving way to a simpler spotted coloration in adults. What really defines this species is the dorsal fin. The leading rays develop long, feathery extensions over time, a feature that becomes more pronounced as the fish ages. Like many Synodontis, it has a habit of resting inverted beneath driftwood or overhanging rockwork, a perfectly normal behavior that surprises new keepers the first time they see it. In the wild, it inhabits river systems across a broad stretch of central and west Africa, from the White Nile to the Niger, Chad, and Cross basins, often over muddy substrates. It feeds primarily on insect larvae but also grazes on algae, making it an easy omnivore to satisfy in captivity. Adults can be territorial, especially toward other Synodontis, so tankmates should be chosen with care. Robust tetras, larger barbs, and appropriately sized cichlids tend to work well. Small fish risk becoming a meal. With good husbandry, these catfish can live well beyond 15 years.
