The Coas Synodontis (Synodontis obesus) is a robust, thick-bodied catfish native to the coastal river systems of West and Central Africa, ranging from Ghana down through the Niger delta and Cross River to Gabon along the Bay of Guinea. It's one of the larger members of the Synodontis genus, capable of reaching well over a foot in length under good conditions, so it demands a genuinely spacious setup and tankmates that can hold their own against a fish of that size and presence. Like most synodontids, it sports the classic upturned mouth, strong spined pectoral fins, and mottled patterning typical of the group. Built for rooting around rocky and sandy substrates in search of food. What sets this species apart biologically is an internal electric organ situated along the back, formed from modified muscle tissue. Not strong enough to stun prey, but thought to play a role in communication or orientation. It's an egg-layer in the wild, though captive breeding is rarely reported. As an intermediate-level fish, it suits keepers who already have experience managing large, somewhat territorial bottom-dwellers. Plan around its eventual adult size from the start, and provide plenty of hiding spots to keep it comfortable.
