About

A large and active Asian cyprinid, Systomus orphoides carries some genuinely attractive markings for those who track it down. Think orange-red tail fins edged with broad black margins, a dark blotch on the caudal peduncle, rows of black spots along the scale rows, and a small dark spot beneath the dorsal fin. It's not a fish you'll find readily in the trade; it turns up most often as an accidental inclusion in shipments of other species, so patience is usually required. Native to parts of Asia, it inhabits the kind of waters that produce big, fast-moving fish with confident personalities. That confidence comes through clearly in the aquarium. This is a boisterous species that can rattle smaller or more timid tankmates, particularly when food hits the water. It does best alongside other robust fish of comparable size. Think larger cyprinids, Garra species, or botiid loaches. Like many schooling barbs, it settles down considerably when kept in a group of six or more, becomes bolder overall, and channels any competitive energy into internal social dynamics rather than bothering neighbors. Breeding has not been documented in home aquaria, and given the scale of a typical spawning event, it's a project probably best left alone. A manageable species for a patient beginner with appropriate space and tankmates.
