The zebra tilapia (Tilapia buttikoferi) is one of those fish that commands a tank entirely on its own terms. Native to the coastal river systems of West Africa, from Guinea-Bissau down through western Liberia, it inhabits larger rivers with rocky substrates in the wild. You won't find it tucked into small tributaries or quiet backwaters. Its common name comes from the bold, dark vertical banding across a pale body, a pattern that stays vivid well into adulthood and makes individuals easy to identify at a glance. These are substantial fish, and a specimen that has settled into a large tank can be genuinely impressive in size and presence. That said, the temperament is the thing you really need to understand going in: zebra tilapia are highly territorial and can be aggressive toward tankmates and even toward their keeper during routine maintenance. In the wild they form pair bonds and guard large spawning territories, and that same drive translates directly into aquarium behavior. They can spawn year-round under the right conditions, with both parents sharing brood care duties. This is an intermediate-level fish mainly because of its size requirements and its personality. Experienced cichlid keepers who appreciate bold, interactive fish tend to get the most out of keeping them.
