The spotted tilapia (Tilapia mariae) is a solidly built West African cichlid found along a stretch of Atlantic-facing coastline from Côte d'Ivoire to Cameroon, where it inhabits everything from slow lagoons and muddy canals to rocky river sections and warm springs. In the wild it forms mixed-age groups alongside other species, but its personality in captivity is another matter. This fish gets territorial, especially when it decides to spawn. Adults develop a pattern of dark vertical bars and spots across a greenish-grey body, and they can reach an impressive size, so a roomy tank is a must. Feeding is straightforward since spotted tilapia are opportunistic omnivores that readily accept most foods, though plant matter makes up a large share of their natural diet. Where this species really stands out is its breeding behavior. Pairs are monogamous and appear to bond for life, taking turns guarding while the other feeds. They prepare nest sites on flat surfaces and logs, and both parents actively defend the eggs and fry until the youngsters are free-swimming and beyond. That parental dedication is genuinely impressive to watch, though tankmates will bear the brunt of it. This is an intermediate-level species best kept by hobbyists who appreciate cichlid personality and have planned their tank around a dominant pair.
