Snakeskin Gourami

Found in the sluggish backwaters, flooded forests, and heavily vegetated shallows of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the snakeskin gourami (Trichogaster pectoralis) is one of the larger members of its family and carries itself with a calm, unhurried presence that matches its origins in slow-moving water. Like other labyrinth fish, it can draw oxygen directly from the air at the surface, an adaptation that lets it thrive in low-oxygen environments where other species would struggle. In the aquarium it is a genuinely peaceful fish, comfortable at all levels of the water column, and it tends to leave tankmates alone provided it has enough space to move around. At full size this is a substantial animal, so that minimum tank size matters more than it might with smaller gouramis. Across Southeast Asia it is far better known as a food fish than an aquarium species. Dried and fresh forms are traded widely in Thailand and neighboring countries, and it is cultivated in peat-swamp areas as an economically important crop. For the hobbyist it is a rewarding, if somewhat understated, fish whose size, peaceful nature, and tolerance of a fairly wide range of water conditions make it a workable choice for a spacious community setup with similarly sized, non-aggressive companions.
