The upsidedown catfish (Synodontis batensoda) is one of those fish that makes visitors do a double-take, because swimming belly-up is not a sign of distress here. It's simply how this species gets around. That inverted posture is thought to be an adaptation for feeding at the water's surface, where it can pick off insects and other morsels with ease. In the wild, it ranges widely across West and Central Africa, turning up in major river systems including the Nile, Niger, Senegal, Gambia, and Chad basins, so it's a species accustomed to a broad range of conditions across a large geographic footprint. Beyond the novelty of its swimming style, this is a genuinely capable omnivore that will work through algae, detritus, planktonic material, and meaty foods like crustaceans and small invertebrates. It's a solidly built catfish that can reach a respectable size, so tankmates should be chosen with that in mind. Smaller fish may eventually become a meal. Synodontis in general are known for producing audible squeaking sounds when handled, and batensoda is no exception. Intermediate-level experience is a reasonable baseline, mostly because of its size requirements and the need to think carefully about compatible tankmates.
