A rarely kept but instantly recognizable fish from the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific, Zanclus canescens, commonly known simply by its scientific name, is the sole member of its family, making it genuinely one of a kind. Its bold black, white, and yellow banding, long trailing dorsal filament, and tubular snout give it an appearance unlike almost anything else swimming on a reef. In the wild it ranges from East Africa to Hawaii and down into the Eastern Pacific as far as Peru, turning up across a huge variety of reef habitats from turbid inner lagoons to exposed seaward rocky slopes. It tends to move in pairs or loose trios, though genuine large schools do occur. Despite a reputation as peaceful and curious, it shares the inquisitive, exploratory personality of its distant surgeonfish relatives along with a mild territorial streak, this fish is notoriously difficult to keep alive long-term in aquariums. The "beginner" care label on paper does not reflect reality: individuals frequently decline in captivity, likely due to dietary challenges around the encrusting invertebrates they graze on in the wild. Anyone drawn to this species should research its specific feeding needs thoroughly before acquiring one, and factor in its need for a generous, well-established system.
