The African Filter Shrimp (Atya gabonensis) is one of the larger freshwater shrimp you'll encounter in the hobby, capable of reaching five to six inches when fully grown, though most specimens sold in shops come in at one and a half to three inches. Despite the common alias 'Vampire Shrimp,' there's nothing menacing about this species. It's a thoroughly peaceful animal that poses no threat to tankmates of any reasonable size. What sets it apart from most shrimp is how it feeds: rather than grazing on surfaces, it fans the water column with mitt-like appendages that catch fine particles and suspended organic matter. Because of this, it gravitates toward areas of stronger current in the tank, so good water movement isn't just appreciated, it's genuinely necessary for the animal to thrive. Coloration is variable and somewhat unpredictable. Individuals can appear gray, blue, pink, or brown depending on mood, diet, and surroundings, which keeps things interesting over time. Breeding in home aquaria hasn't been documented, since the larvae need brackish conditions to develop. This species is generally considered accessible for newer keepers, provided the tank has enough flow to keep the shrimp well-fed and active.
