Found in the shallow, vegetation-choked brooks, streams, and swampy margins of the Central African rainforest, Aphyoplatys duboisi is a small killifish native to the Pool Malebo region and surrounding drainages of the western Democratic Republic of the Congo, including parts of the lower Kwango, lower Kasai, and middle Congo River systems. Unlike many of its killifish relatives, this species is non-seasonal, meaning it does not follow the boom-and-bust reproductive cycle tied to drying pools that makes some killies tricky to breed and keep. That alone sets it apart from the group's reputation for complexity. Adults top out well under two inches, making them a genuinely small fish that rewards a well-planted, calm setup where they can move through cover comfortably. Their natural habitat is shaded and slow-moving, so they appreciate similar conditions in the aquarium. Given their manageable care requirements and forgiving temperament, they represent a reasonable entry point for hobbyists curious about killifish but put off by the demands of annual species. They do best in a species tank or with other small, peaceful fish that won't outcompete them at feeding time.
