Baryancistrus sp. L142 is one of several white- or yellow-spotted loricariids sold under the name 'snowball pleco', a trade name that originated with a different species entirely and has since spread to a handful of lookalikes. This one comes from a narrow stretch of the rio Tapajós in Pará state, Brazil, running between Itaituba and the small settlement of Pimenta, making it a relatively range-restricted fish compared to many of its relatives. It belongs to the enormous family Loricariidae, which contains over 700 described species and many still awaiting formal names. The latter group assigned 'L numbers' by hobbyists and scientists as a practical stand-in for a full scientific name. Baryancistrus is distinguished from close relatives by an enlarged membrane just behind the last branched dorsal-fin ray, a small but consistent anatomical detail that separates it from genera like Hemiancistrus and Parancistrus. In the aquarium, juveniles behave themselves reasonably well, but adults, males especially, become seriously territorial and will not tolerate rivals in their space. Tankmates that occupy mid-water or upper levels, such as medium to large characins, tend to fare best. Combining it with other bottom-dwellers is possible only in larger setups with carefully arranged hiding spots and visual breaks. Breeding has not been documented in captivity.
