A slender, dark-bodied fish from the peat swamp forests of Indonesia, Betta simorum belongs to the bellica group within a genus that now counts nearly 70 recognised species. Its coloration runs to deep brown with iridescent green scaling, and the body profile is noticeably elongated compared to the familiar domesticated betta. Like all members of the anabantoid suborder, it possesses a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe air directly from the surface. A handy adaptation for life in the oxygen-poor, tea-colored waters of its native habitat. Despite being listed as beginner-accessible, this is not a fish for a general community tank. It tends to be overwhelmed by boisterous tankmates, and its water chemistry demands, genuinely acidic conditions that most other fish would struggle in, narrow your options considerably. Keeping it alone or with very peaceful, similarly sized companions works best. Breeding follows the typical bubble-nesting pattern of the genus, with the male building his nest in a tube or under broad leaves and taking sole charge of the eggs afterward. One practical note for anyone attempting to breed it: a tight-fitting, gap-free lid is essential, as the developing fry need access to warm, humid air for proper labyrinth organ formation.
