The Blue Flash (Thorichthys aureus) is a cichlid from the Atlantic-draining river systems of Central America, ranging from Golden Creek in Belize down through the Motagua River basin in Honduras. In the wild it occupies warm lakes and lagoons but gravitates most strongly toward the lower and middle stretches of rivers, with only scattered populations making it into upper reaches. It shares the genus with the more widely kept firemouth, and that relationship shows. This fish has a similar laterally compressed body and a habit of flaring and posturing that makes it a genuinely interesting fish to observe. The common name comes from the iridescent blue-green spangling that flashes across the flanks and gill covers, which intensifies noticeably when the fish is in good condition or engaged in a territorial display. Adults reach a modest size compared to many Central American cichlids, which makes a 55-gallon tank a workable setup rather than a bare minimum. This is an intermediate-level species, mainly because of its cichlid temperament during breeding and its preference for harder, alkaline water that not every tap supply delivers naturally. Given appropriate tankmates and a well-structured aquascape with defined territories, it rewards keepers with active, expressive behavior and reliable spawning.
