The blue lyretail killifish (Aphyosemion gardneri), also known as the steel-blue aphyosemion, is one of the more accessible killifish for hobbyists ready to step beyond the basics. Native to slow-moving streams and forest pools across West Africa, wild fish typically occupy heavily vegetated, shaded waters where leaf litter and soft substrates dominate the environment. Males are genuinely impressive fish, carrying rich blue and green body coloration overlaid with red spotting and edging, while females are more subdued but still neatly patterned by most fish standards. The lyretail name comes from the distinctive extensions on the caudal fin of mature males, which develop fully once fish are well settled and fed a varied diet. In the aquarium, gardneri is generally considered one of the better entry points into killifish keeping. Not a complete beginner fish, but far more forgiving than many of its relatives. Males can be scrappy with each other, so a species tank with one male to several females works best, or careful pairing with peaceful tankmates in a community setup. Spawning is achievable for most intermediate keepers, and raising the next generation is one of the genuine pleasures this species offers.
