Found in clear, fast-flowing streams across Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, and coastal South China, this small amphidromous goby, Stiphodon atropurpureus, leads a surprisingly complex life. Like its close relatives, it is believed to follow an amphidromous cycle. Adults breed in freshwater, larvae wash downstream into the sea to develop, and juveniles then navigate back to freshwater streams. That dependence on an unbroken stream-to-ocean corridor makes it vulnerable to dams, poorly designed culverts, and habitat degradation, and wild collection for the aquarium trade adds additional pressure in some parts of its range. In the aquarium, it grazes constantly on biofilm and algae coating rocks and hardscape, so a mature, well-lit tank with plenty of covered surfaces is genuinely important for keeping it well-fed and content. It is naturally skittish and will occasionally press itself into the substrate with just its head visible. This is normal behavior rather than a sign of illness. Males can be territorial with each other, so tank layout matters. The species is small enough that a modest tank can work, but clean, well-oxygenated water and a stable environment are non-negotiable. An intermediate-level keeper who does their research will find this an rewarding and unusual goby to keep.
