The rainbow goodeid (Characodon lateralis) is a small but feisty livebearer from the clear, vegetation-rich springs of Durango, Mexico, within the upper Río Mezquital drainage. It belongs to the family Goodeidae, a group restricted to highland Mexico that reproduces through internal fertilization and gives birth to fully formed young. What makes goodeids particularly interesting is how they nourish developing embryos: rather than relying purely on yolk, nutrients are delivered through a placenta-like structure called a trophotaenia. In Characodon this structure is relatively simple, consisting of a pair of ribbon-like extensions, but the result is still robust, well-developed fry that can take small live foods from day one. Broods typically run 10 to 20 young after an incubation period of around seven to eight weeks. The species itself is taxonomically complicated. Genetic work has cast doubt on historical distribution records, and distinct wild populations show noticeable differences in color, body shape, and fin proportions. Hobbyists keeping this fish should treat each population as a separate unit and avoid mixing them with each other or with aquarium strains of uncertain origin. Males are territorial and pushy, so the tank layout matters. This is an intermediate-level species, and beyond the challenge of its care, keeping it responsibly carries genuine conservation significance given how precarious wild goodeid populations have become.
