Clownface Betta
Betta cracens
A slender, soft-water mouthbrooder that's genuinely rare in the hobby

About
Found in the freshwater swamp forests of Sumatra, Betta cracens is a member of the pugnax species complex. A group of closely related bettas notorious for confusing even experienced keepers. It is reportedly the most slender-bodied fish in its group, and both sexes carry a thin blue margin along the anal fin that can help with identification. That said, correctly identified specimens are genuinely scarce; much of what gets sold under this name turns out to be B. pugnax, B. raja, or another relative. Like all bettas, it possesses a labyrinth organ that lets it breathe air directly at the surface, which becomes especially relevant when raising fry. Youngsters need access to warm, humid air above the water to develop this organ properly. In terms of temperament, this is a fish that does not belong in a typical community setup. Larger or more boisterous tankmates will stress it out, but it can coexist peacefully with small cyprinids or loaches from similar habitats, or simply be kept alone or in a quiet species pair. Breeding is genuinely interesting: the male is a paternal mouthbrooder, incubating eggs for nearly two weeks before releasing fully formed, free-swimming fry. The female takes the lead in courtship, which is a nice reversal of what most keepers expect.
