The Congo barb (Clypeobarbus congicus) is a genuinely uncommon fish in the hobby. When it does show up on exporters' lists, it's worth double-checking identification, as misidentified species are reportedly common. Native to the Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it inhabits a range stretching from the lower Congo near its estuary all the way up to the upper Lualaba, with additional records from the Rusizi drainage. One of the genus Clypeobarbus's defining physical features is a midlateral row of enlarged, shield-like scales edged in dark pigment, which sets it apart from the more familiar African barbs that occasionally share importers' stock lists. Behaviorally, this species is peaceful but nuanced. It forms shoals with a clear pecking order among males rather than the looser schooling behavior seen in many tetras. Groups of eight or more are strongly recommended, and the tank should offer plenty of broken sightlines through plants or decor so subordinate individuals can get a break from dominant fish. Kept in small numbers or cramped conditions, individuals can become withdrawn or get harassed. Good tankmates include dwarf cichlids, alestiid tetras, and smaller mochokid catfish. Essentially calm, similarly sized African species. An intermediate-level fish, it rewards keepers who pay attention to social dynamics.
