Found across some of Africa's most iconic river systems, Barbus lineomaculatus is a small, active barb native to the Zambezi, Okavango, Limpopo, and Cunene drainages, with its range extending north through central and east Africa into the upper Congo basin. It's particularly common in Zimbabwe and Zambia, where it turns up in everything from modest woodland streams to broad, flowing rivers. A habitat flexibility that hints at a reasonably adaptable fish. One of the more interesting aspects of its natural history is its spawning behavior: when seasonal rains arrive, individuals move upstream to reproduce in temporarily flooded grassy areas, a migratory impulse worth keeping in mind if you ever want to attempt breeding in captivity. In the aquarium, this species does best with some current and good oxygenation to reflect its riverine origins. As a carnivore, it needs meaty foods regularly and won't thrive long-term on plant-based staples alone. Adults reach around two and a half to three inches, making a 25-gallon tank a workable starting point, though more space is always appreciated for active swimmers. It's not a species demanding specialist-level expertise, but it rewards keepers who pay attention to water quality and diet.
