The Gold Ringer (Cypraea annulus) is a marine cowrie shell native to the shallow coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific, typically found hugging the seafloor at depths of just a meter or two down to about eight meters. It is immediately recognizable by the bright golden-orange ring on the dorsal surface of its glossy, rounded shell. A feature that makes it one of the more easily identified cowries in the hobby. Like all cowries, the living animal periodically extends its soft mantle over the shell, which is how that characteristic porcelain-smooth surface is maintained. In the aquarium, this species is benthic by nature, spending most of its time moving slowly along rockwork and substrate. It is peaceful and poses no real threat to tankmates, making it a reasonable choice for a community reef setup. As an herbivore, it grazes on algae and organic material, which means it can actually do some useful cleanup work in a well-established system. Given its straightforward temperament and modest demands, it is generally considered accessible even for newer marine keepers, provided the tank has been properly cycled and offers enough live rock to support natural grazing. Expect a lifespan in the range of two to three years under good conditions.
