Money Cowrie

The money cowrie (Cypraea moneta) carries a remarkable history beyond the aquarium. This small marine gastropod was one of the most widely used currency shells in human history, traded across Africa, Asia, and beyond for centuries. Native to the Indo-Pacific, it ranges from the coastlines of East and South Africa all the way out to eastern Polynesia, where it lives on the seafloor from the shallows down to considerable depths. In the wild it's a benthic creature, meaning it spends its life crawling along the bottom, grazing on algae and organic matter. The shell itself is immediately recognizable: a smooth, porcelain-like oval with a toothed opening running along the underside, typically pale yellow to cream in color with a flattened base. Living specimens are even more interesting to observe, as the mantle, a fleshy tissue that the snail can extend over its shell, is patterned and textured quite differently from the polished shell it produces. Worth noting is that this species is marine, so despite the classification listed here, it belongs in a saltwater reef or marine invertebrate setup. Peaceful and slow-moving, it poses no threat to tankmates and can be a rewarding addition for hobbyists interested in keeping gastropods.
